Lab 7:  Installing a Sound Card


Purpose: 
To learn how to install expansion devices, particularly a sound card
To learn how to install and remove device drivers
To learn how to use device manager to check for available DMAs, and IRQs, 
   hardware conflicts and other functions.

Procedure:

I. Testing Verifying PC
1. Test your PC to see that it is working properly. 
2. Start Windows 9X or otherwise check your system. 
3. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System. 
4. Check List devices type
5. Find sound devices, if any are present that should not be, remove the drivers (do not remove the PC speaker).
List any present ______________________________________
6. Check with instructor before removing them ______________
7. Check List Devices by Connection, then click Properties.
8. Find and list any open IRQs __________________________________
9. Find and list any open DMAs _________________________________
10. If you have a book or special instructions with the sound card read it and
 follow any special installation instructions. Some times you need to install the software 
before installing the card, sometimes after.
11. If your sound card is not plug and play use any software or jumpers to set the IRQs
 on the card to vacant IRQs you found above. If plug and play omit this step.

II. Installing the Sound Card
1. Shut down the PC if it is on (Start, Shut Down).
2. Remove the Case enough to reach part of the unpainted chasses.
3. Ground yourself by touching a metal part of the chassis interior.
4. Remove the PC power plug from the rear.
5. Remove the sound card from any packaging. Handle it by the edges, being careful not to touch any of the chips.
6. Install the sound card in the appropriate slot. Make sure you insert it evenly so it is properly seated and you do not crack the motherboard.
7. Screw the sound card in place.
8. Attach any speaker or microphone cables. 
9. Install the power for any amplified speakers.
10. Plug the PC power cable back in the rear of the PC. 
11. Reboot the PC.
12. Let the OS start.
13. The OS should recognize a new device and it will allow you to add any CDs or 
Floppies with appropriate drivers. If necessary insert the Drivers and tell the OS what 
drive and folder they are located in. If it is plug and play it should be properly set up. 
14. When the OS is done go back to Control Panel and see if there is a new device present, check its properties.
15. What are the names of any new devices and what are its resources?

16. Test the devices to see if they work (Go to system, sounds to test for sounds)

III. Removing the Sound Card
1. Remove the drivers from Control Panel for any sound devices you added.
2. Shut down windows.
3. Ground yourself, then remove the power cable on the rear.
4. Remove any devices plugged into the sound card in the rear.
5. Remove the screw holding the sound card, then carefully remove the card.
6. Plug the PC power cable back in the rear of the PC. 
7. Reboot the PC.
8. Let the OS start.
9. Check now for any sound devices are they gone or present?
10. List all sound devices which are now present?

11. Check the IRQs and DMAs in Control Panel. 
12. Are the IRQs available now?______________________
13. Are the DMAs available now?______________________
14. Shut down Windows
15. Turn off the monitor
