You also need 5-3.5 inch Floppies, a tool kit and a 3 ring binder for your repair lab book.

Tool Kits: You will be expected to have a basic PC tool kit, or at least a phillips and straight bladed screwdriver.  Bring the kit and your Lab Guide, binder and floppies to each class.

Semester Objectives/Topics:

  • Learn to open a PC Case, insert expansion parts, and install the associated drivers in Windows 9X.  

  • Know how to access and modify the BIOS Setup of a PC.

  • Be able to remove and install basic parts of a PC including Floppies, CD Roms, Memory, and Hard Drives.

  • Understand the principles and differences between IDE and SCSI technology.

  • Understand how a hard drive is logically organized.

  • Be able to create, remove and resize partitions with FDisk and Partition Magic.

  • Be able to boot a system without an OS, Format a hard drive and install the Windows 9X operating system and components.  

  • Be able to access the Control Panel and Windows Troubleshooters.

  • Be able to use diagnostic software such as Norton Diags or Sandra.

  • Understand and be able to install CD ROM drives.

  • Understand the Basics of Electricity and power supplies and electrical safety.
  • Understand and be able to apply Surge Protection and Battery Backup.
  • Create a Repair Lab Book in a 3 ring binder, consisting of handouts, boot diskettes, answers to the lab work and other items.

Grading will be a combination of POP quizzes during class, plus lab work and Exams.  Since labs and quizzes are given during class (some without notice), attendance of all classes is important.  Unless you give advance notice of missing a class you may not be able to make up those grades.

Points toward final grade:   Mid-Term 100 points:   Labs, Quizzes and Assignments 100 points; Final Exam 200 points (100 in class +100 take home). Students caught cheating will flunk the exam. Repeat offenders will flunk the course.  (Total Points approximate, Exact Points subject to change)

Letter Grade Equivalents: >= 90 =A; 80-89=B; 70-79=C; 60-69=D; <=59=F
